Appearance

The overwhelming majority of immortals appear as human-like creatures, though they often possess exotic features most humans consider disturbing or compelling. Having evolved from animals and elemental forces, immortals were in constant strife with one another for most of their history. The intellectual ascension of man above animals inspired the immortals to adopt his form and to submerge their own true shape, their himsati form. The benefits were obvious and immediate. Since all immortals more or less shared the same human body, racial hatred diminished to a level which allowed cooperation. Immortals had been losing the war against their enemies and needed to unite in a final effort of self-preservation.

The immortal character may appear as any ethnic group among mortals, or may have mixed traits which do not normally occur. The player should decide how his character looks and dresses and should not be bound by convention. Among the more exotic features of immortals that separates them from humans are their eye colors (which tend toward any imaginable color) and their fashions, which combines the newest styles with elements from bygone eras.

After deciding on his appearance, the player should think about his true form. This can get even more interesting, since immortals are actually animals, plants or inanimate materials possessed of a living soul. Immortal true forms range from fire, light, shadow to glass, steel or shimmering water. Usually even an elemental immortal has an animal shape, such as a raven made of fire or a tiger made of ice. The possibilities are as endless as a player’s imagination.

Attributes

When determining the initial value of each of your character’s starting attributes, its simplest to think in terms of human parameters. Humans range from a scale of 0 to 5 points in each attribute (although their soul can range up to 15, possibly greater.) The following scale gives you an idea of the range of abilities an attribute allows, depending on it’s rating from 0 (poor) to 5 (superior):

0 Poor. The character is severely handicapped in this area, with little to no ability. He gains no bonus on dice rolls which depend upon this halo color. A zero blue halo means that the character is effectively blind.

1 Below average. While functional, the character is not up to the average level of the general population.

2 Average. Most humans fall in this range for most attributes.

3 Above average. The character is very well developed in this area, or has a natural affinity for tasks relying on this attribute. This halo color is strong enough that those who have even casual contact with the character may notice the superiority it lends to his actions. For example, a blue halo of 3 in a character will demonstrate keen eyesight, sense of smell or hearing to those who see these senses being used.

4 Exceptional. Outstanding, and usually the top level encountered in the general population. Characters with a rating of 4 in any halo color are most likely recognized as having world-class natural talent, for example, they may be brilliant scientists or athletic superstars.

5 Superior. This represents the maximal heights of human achievement, such as superb Olympic athletes or Nobel-prize winners. Characters with these abilities are likely to be recruited by immortals into their own human factions, the quiet cultures. More commonly, characters with at least this rating are immortals on the verge of awakening. \

Anything beyond 5 represents a supernatural excellence that transcends human ability.

Determining your character’s attributes has three steps. First, you have 16 initial points to distribute in each halo as your basic abilities. These are free points and do not subtract from your starting memory points. They represent normal abilities associated with living as a mortal human. Don’t worry if you can’t cover all of the abilities at the level you’d like with these initial 16 points; you will have a chance to purchase additional ones in a few minutes. In the mean time, just try to get the relative proportions correct. Only one of the free points may be allocated into the soul attribute. The rest must be placed in the various colored attributes such as strength (orange) and will (red).

The Himsati Tier

The Himsati Tier is a scale to chart the attribute growth of a character, his evolution into a more powerful being. As a chart, it determines point costs for buying attributes to a higher level. The higher the attribute becomes, the more expensive it becomes to further raise it.

Likewise, the tier determines how many points of energy can be placed in each attribute. This helps to balance the character without having one attribute wildly out of proportion with the others. Evolution, for immortals, is an all-encompassing experience. All attributes grow in relationship with one another (although not in exact proportion.)

Beginning immortal characters start at Himsati Tier 1. This means they get 16 freebie points to assign to their attributes. The cost is also listed.

Other than the beginning limit of one free Soul point, there is no limit to the amount of points a character has in any one attribute. Leaving certain attributes weak in favor of others, however, can be dangerous to the character’s well-being. If, for example, a player builds his character with strength of 7, he only has only 8 other points to assign to the remaining 6 attributes. He will have less than 2 points per each other attribute.
